Reduce, Reuse, Recycle in action at ebm-papst A&NZ

Since mid-2016 the team at ebm-papst A&NZ in Laverton North have been giving new life to old plastic. Thanks to an initiative lead by ebm-papst Quality & Systems Administrator Barb Henderson, the EPS used in production at ebm-papst A&NZ is being repurposed and recycled.

With the GreenTech philosophy at the core of every product manufactured by the ebm-papst Group, environmental impact and awareness of the complete product life-cycle is imperative. However, the packaging of some products requires the use of expanded polystyrene (EPS), a difficult to recycle and non-biodegradable material. EPS is frequently used in packaging and production due to its light weight, protective and durable nature. With a lifespan of up to 500 years, EPS that is thrown away adds to Australia’s growing landfills.

Thanks to an initiative lead by ebm-papst Quality & Systems Administrator Barb Henderson, the EPS used in production at ebm-papst A&NZ is being repurposed and recycled. With the support of three local councils, including Wyndham City Council, unused foam rings from the packaging of fans are now donated to local kindergartens for arts and crafts. The remaining rings are collected in 3m2 bags and taken to Unipod, a nearby waffle pod manufacturer for the construction industry. Donated EPS from local businesses is recycled into the waffle pods which are used to reduce the waste and cost associated with poured concrete pads.

Through this initiative ebm-papst A&NZ has reduced the amount of waste directed to landfill and is proudly supporting local community and local business through responsible waste management.

If your company has spare EPS and would like to recycle it, contact your local council and/or Unipod in Derrimut, Victoria on (03) 9394 1117.
